The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it descends, 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
