The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ When the Event inevitable cometh to pass, 1 there is no denying its coming 2 The event will be abasing some, and exalting some. 3 When the earth is shaken up convulsively, 4 And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling, 5 So that they become dust seattered. 6 And you shall be three sorts. 7 Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand? 8 And there shall be such as will have lost themselves in evil: oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil! 9 and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers 10 those are they brought nigh the Throne, 11 In the gardens of bliss. 12 a good many of those of olden times, 13 And a few of later ages, 14 upon close-wrought couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 They will be served by immortal boys, 17 carrying goblets and ewers and cups filled with the purest wine, 18 a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness; 19 And fruit of what they select 20 and the meat of any bird that they may desire; 21 and fair maidens with large, lustrous eyes 22 The likes unto pearls hidden. 23 a recompense for that they laboured. 24 Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, 25 only the words of peace and tranquillity. 26 As for the People on the Right, how fortunate shall be the people on the Right! 27 Amid thornless lote-trees, 28 And clustered plantains, 29 Lengthened shadows, 30 and waters gushing, 31 and abundant fruits, 32 Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden, 33 on raised couches. 34 for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed, 35 having resurrected them as virgins, 36 chastely amorous, 37 For those of the right hand. 38
