And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allah]. 94 We then replaced their misfortune with well-being until they were relieved and began saying, "Our fathers had also experienced good and bad days." Suddenly, We struck them (with torment) while they were all unaware (of what was happening). 95 Had the people of the villages believed and been cautious, We would have opened upon them the blessings from heaven and earth. But they belied, and We seized them for what they earned. 96 Did the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of Our wrath by night while they were asleep? 97 Or else did they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they played about (care-free)? 98 Do they feel secure against God's devising? No one feels secure against God's devising except for those doomed to ruin. 99
