(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 "And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?" 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 Saleh said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
