Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
