The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
