The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And your garments purify! 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
