The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
