The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the sun and his brightness, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 And the day when it shows it, 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, 8 Truly he succeeds that purifies it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
