He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 and in awe of God 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 On honoured leaves 13 lofty and pure, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble and pious. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 Of what did He create him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 to yield therein corn, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and grass, 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 laughing and joyous 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
