The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
