The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 He will be far away from the most pious. (The first Caliph S. Abu Bakr Siddiq) 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
