The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 save those that pray 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 who guard their privates 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
