The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 said, "This (the Quran) is nothing but magic, inherited from ancient magicians. 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
