A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
