The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
