The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise and give warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And your garments do purify, 4 And stay away from idols. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And children present [with him] 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Nay, verily, it is against Our messages that he knowingly, stubbornly sets himself 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
