۞ It is He Who created you from a single soul, and from him made its mate for him to gain comfort with her; so when the male covered her, she was burdened lightly in her womb, and she therefore moved easily carrying it; and when she felt the burden heavy, they both cried to their Lord Allah, "Indeed You may give to us a child as You will, so we will surely be thankful." 189 But when He giveth them a goodly child, they ascribe to others a share in the gift they have received: but Allah is exalted high above the partners they ascribe to Him. 190 What! they associate (with Him) that which does not create any thing, while they are themselves created! 191 And who cannot succour them, nor can succour themselves. 192 And if you invite them to guidance, they will not follow you; it is the same to you whether you invite them or you are silent. 193 Surely those whom you call on besides Allah are in a state of subjugation like yourselves; therefore call on them, then let them answer you if you are truthful. 194 Do they have feet to walk on, or hands to hold with, or eyes to see and ears to hear with? Say to them: "Call your compeers, and work out a plot against me, and do not give me time. 195 Lo! my Protecting Friend is Allah Who revealeth the Scripture. He befriendeth the righteous. 196 "But those ye call upon besides Him, are unable to help you, and indeed to help themselves." 197 If thou callest them to guidance, they hear not. Thou wilt see them looking at thee, but they see not. 198 Accept the easing, order with fine jurisprudence, and avoid the ignorant. 199 If you are instigated by the Devil to evil seek refuge in God, for God hears all and knows everything. 200 Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight. 201 But (as for) their brothers (the devils) they (i.e. the devils) plunge them deeper into error, and they never stop short. 202 And when you, [O Muhammad], do not bring them a sign, they say, "Why have you not contrived it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This [Qur'an] is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe." 203 So, when the Quran is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imam (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Surat Al-Fatiha), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 9, Pages 162-4] 204 And do thou (O Muhammad) remember thy Lord within thyself humbly and with awe, below thy breath, at morn and evening. And be not thou of the neglectful. 205 Behold, those who are near unto thy Sustainer are never too proud to worship Him; and they extol His limitless glory, and prostrate themselves before Him [alone]. ۩ 206
