AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot, 61 He said: Surely you are an unknown people. 62 They said: Nay, we have come to you with that about which they disputed. 63 and we are bringing thee the certainty [of its fulfilment]: for, behold, we are speaking the truth indeed. 64 "So leave with your family late in the night, yourself remaining in the rear, and let none turn back to look, and go where you will be commanded." 65 And We informed him the decision of this command, that at morning the root of the disbelievers would be cut off. 66 In the meantime the people of the city came to Lot rejoicing. 67 [Lout (Lot)] said: "Verily! these are my guests, so shame me not. 68 Fear God and do not shame me." 69 They replied: "Did we not forbid you again and again to extend hospitality to all and sundry?" 70 [Lot] said: "[Take instead] these daughters of mine, if you must do [whatever you intend to do]!" 71 [But the angels spoke thus:] "As thou livest, [O Lot, they will not listen to thee:] behold, in their delirium [of lust] they are but blindly stumbling to and fro!" 72 Therefore the scream overcame them at sunrise. 73 We turned the town upside down and rained upon them stones of clay. 74 Verily therein are signs for men of sagacity. 75 And verily they are on a pathway lasting. 76 Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers. 77 And indeed the Dwellers of the Woods were unjust. 78 So, We took vengeance on them. They are both on an open highway, plain to see. 79
