Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. 1 (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His servant Zakariya. 2 when he called upon his Lord in secret, 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 who will be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him a person who will please you". 6 O Zakariyya! verily We give thee the glad tidings of a boy: his name shall be Yahya; We have not afore-time made his namesake. 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age." 8 He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing." 9 He said, 'Lord, appoint to me some sign.' Said He, 'Thy sign is that thou shall not speak to men, though being without fault, three nights.' 10 Then he came forth unto his people from the sanctuary, and signified to them: Glorify your Lord at break of day and fall of night. 11 [Allah] said, "O John, take the Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy 12 and a tenderness from Us, and purity; and he was godfearing, 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 And Peace be unto him the day he was born and the day he dieth and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
