The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
