The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
