The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. 1 The Romans are vanquished, 2 in the lands close-by; yet it is they who, notwithstanding this their defeat, shall be victorious 3 within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. And on that day will the believers [too, have cause to] rejoice 4 in God's help; God helps whomsoever He will; and He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 5 The promise of God! God fails not His promise, but most men do not know it. 6 They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter. 7 Have they not pondered upon themselves? Allah created not the heavens and the earth, and that which is between them, save with truth and for a destined end. But truly many of mankind are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord. 8 Have they not travelled through the land to see how terrible was the end of the people who lived before them. The people who lived before them were stronger than them in might, in tilling, and in developing the earth. Our Messengers came to them with clear miracles. God did not do an injustice to them but they wronged themselves. 9 Then the end of those who committed evil was evil, for they belied the signs of God, and they derided them. 10
