We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 yet there was not a sign that We showed them that was not greater than its sister, and We seized them with the punishment so that they might return. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 and We made them a thing of the past, and We made them an example to later people. 56
