Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
