Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
