Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
