Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
