Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
