Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
