The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the declining star, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 and taught to him 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat the other third? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
