The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
