a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those on the left - how wretched are those on the left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 "They will all be gathered together - on the appointed time of the known day." 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
