A crowd of earlier generations 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
