a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Verily we are undone. 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
