A numerous company from among the first, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
