A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
