These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
