a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
