A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
