These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and many from the later generations. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
