The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Save worshippers. 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
