The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Eager to roast; 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 except those that pray, 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
