The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Save worshippers. 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
