The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Save worshippers. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
