The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 except those who are steadfast 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Are free of blame, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
