The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened); 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Are free of blame, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
