In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. 14 We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh. 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord. 19
