a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
