The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and defilement flee! 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then he looked, 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
